We humans are a superstitious lot. From saying ‘Morning Mr. Magpie’ to knocking on wood, many ordinarily sensible people occasionally behave completely irrationally.
But when it comes to the well-known superstition that Friday 13th brings terrible luck, recent statistics suggest that it might in fact be the opposite.
Research from insurer Policy Expert shows that the chance of misfortune and accidents occurring actually reduces on Fridays that fall on the 13th day of the month.
Looking back over a number of years, Policy Expert’s figures indicate that home insurance claims drop on such dates when compared to the average.
Claims drop on Friday 13ths
Looking at May of last year, for example, the average claim made during the month was for £1,499. But on Friday, May 13th, claims averaged over £150 less, at £1,331
There is an even greater difference for the previous two Friday 13ths.
Claims made on Friday, 13th November, 2015 were just over £500 less than the average in the month. And for Friday, 13th March 2015, they were £1,300 less.
Going back to Friday 13th December 2013, claims were over £1,400 lower on that day than the average for the month.
Fear of 13
Some experts say the phenomena could be due to triskaidekaphobia, the psychological condition marked by fear of the number 13, which, to a greater or lesser degree, many people feel.
It’s possible that, whether consciously or subconsciously, people modify their behaviour so they’re far more careful than usual, causing fewer mishaps and therefore insurance claims.
Commenting on the findings, Adam Powell, insurance expert at Policy Expert, said: “These figures suggest the UK remains superstitious as ever and that historically we take extra care around that unlucky date”.
He added a ‘warning’ however: “If you’ll be watching your step this Friday, make sure your home insurance policy is up to date and you’ve checked the small print to avoid any nasty surprises, should you encounter a black cat or break a mirror.”
