Cheapest European holiday destinations this summer

Cheapest European holiday destinations this summer

It costs a small fortune for a family of four to jet off abroad in the summer as it’s the most popular time to go away, so finding a holiday bargain can be almost impossible.

Fortunately, every year the friendly people at the Post Office’s Travel Money Service make it easier to plan a trip and still keep the spending down with their Holiday Costs Barometer

By extensively researching the average cost of nine of the most common holiday staples, including sun cream and a meal for two, at hundreds of popular destinations, the PO’s Holiday Barometer helps reveal the cheapest destinations for holidaymakers.

Bulgarian resort cheap as chips

The Bulgarian resort of Sunny Beach tops the list of cheapest European destinations – Europe being where most Brits go for their summer sojourn – for the sixth year in a row, with the average cost of the nine Barometer items being just £38.86.

That’s a third cheaper than any of the Eurozone destinations, where the Algarve is best for bargain hunters seeking to spend their holiday cash in Euros.

How cheap?!

Just how cheap Sunny Beach is can be seen when it’s compared to the tenth on the list, Alicante, in Spain, where the items would set you back £95.24.

And £95 is still not bad when you consider that the nine on the list  include both dinner and lunch for two, as well as a bottle of wine with the evening meal, so £38.86 is truly a bargain!

The top ten cheapest

The full list of items used in the research are dinner for two including wine, lunch for two with no drinks, a cup of coffee, a bottle of beer or lager, a glass of Coca-Cola, a glass of wine, a big bottle of water, sun cream and insect repellent.
