Make sure you’re covered
Hosting Christmas for family and friends can be a wonderful experience – while some find going away to celebrate is even better!
However, if things go wrong the festive break can become a bit of a nightmare. Unexpected disasters – such as floods, burglaries or chimney fires – are fairly common at this time of year.
Of course, we really hope that you have a great Christmas, but it’s best to be prepared. Here are some tips for making sure you’re covered if things do go wrong.
Going away for longer? Check your cover
Most home building and contents insurance cover allows you to be away for between four and six weeks – plenty of time for most trips.
But if you’re planning an extended Christmas break somewhere – a two-month cruise, or tour of Australia perhaps – you might need to extend how long this can be.
If so, you should let us (or your insurer) know as soon as possible. Otherwise you risk not being able to claim if something happens while you’re away.
Valuable pressies – will your cover be enough?
Another consideration at Christmas is the extra value presents add to what’s normally kept in the home.
Most policies stipulate a maximum claim value of between £1,000 to £2,000 for single items – but expensive new laptops and jewellery can easily cost more.
You need to get in touch with us (or your insurer), and flag up anything of high value, or that’s extremely delicate and rare. This can then be noted on your policy and additional cover added, if needed.
Good news – we’ve automatically increased cover for our customers
The good news is, many insurers, including ourselves here at Policy Expert, automatically increase the level of cover for contents during major religious festivals, when gifts might be given and received.
In our case it’s by a significant ten percent. It’s specifically to cover those items you might have bought in December and stored at home.
