Don’t let burglars steal your Christmas fun

Don’t let burglars steal your Christmas fun

Thieves simply love Christmas and it’s perhaps unsurprising that the number of burglaries rise during the festive period

The most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics show that domestic break-in rates have risen by 30%, and are higher in the period up to Christmas and over the New Year.

Boost your home’s security before festivities begin

There are some relatively simple things you can do on a day-to-day basis to help make your home more secure. As well as some extra precautions you can take if you go away for a longer period of time.

It’s useful to know that Home Office figures indicate that homes with decent security measures in place are five times less likely to be targeted by thieves.

Here are our top tips to help you keep your house secure

Leave your lights on – leave a couple of lights on at night, even if you’re in, as it makes burglars assume someone’s home.

Lock up tight – if you go out, double check all your doors and windows are locked.

Improve your locks – go around the house checking locking systems. If they’re weak or loose, it may be worth getting them improved.

Keep valuables out of sight – presents might look nice under a tree, but they’re magnets for thieves. It’s safer to hide them away until the big day itself.

Check outdoors – make sure outbuildings such as garages and sheds are securely locked, with garden items kept out of sight.

Keep your car safe too – keep anything in cars hidden in the boot or under the seats. You might also consider using additional security such as wheel and handbrake locks.

Don’t help the thieves – many burglaries are carried out using householders’ own tools! Keep ladders, crowbars, tool kits and the like locked and hidden away. Also, make sure you keep all keys away from doors and windows where burglars can see and reach them.

Don’t leave your driveway empty – an empty driveway is another giveaway. If you can, leave at least one car parked in your drive.  You could always ask a friend or neighbour to park their car.
