Bank Holiday Warning for Home Insurance

The May Bank holiday is one of the peak times for doing all of these jobs around the house which we have been putting off all winter. In many cases though the rush to the DIY store is followed by accidents around the house which mean that some homeowners spend the rest of the week trying to sort out a home buildings or contents claim.iStock_000015427495XSmall

Accidental Damage

Most of the DIY disasters which see British policyholders on the phone to their insurance company are to do with accidental damage.

Not every home contents insurance policy will cover for accidental damage, and many of them have it as an optional extra. If you haven’t ticked the box and then spill a whole pot of paint over your new carpet, or accidentally fall through the ceiling while trying to lay loft insulation, you won’t be covered.

A third have no cover

Even more alarming than a lack of accidental damage cover is that according to a survey by one of the UK’s largest insurers, a third of people aged 18 to 34 don’t have any insurance at all.

Many young people are under the mistaken impression that if they are living in a rented property then the landlord will take care of insurance for their possessions, whereas this is usually not the case.

Protect Against DIY Disasters

So before you head off to a DIY superstore this Bank Holiday weekend, it’s worth spending a few minutes checking that you are properly insured.

Cover can cost only a few pounds a month, and shopping around will ensure you get the best deal possible. If you’re particularly accident prone, remember to make sure you’re covered for accidental damage too.
